My Story
I’m June M. Everett, a children’s author and nonprofit founder who believes deeply in the power of stories to heal, connect, and inspire change.
I grew up in a hardworking family where love was plentiful, but resources were sometimes limited. Like many children, I learned early how uncertainty can quietly shape a young heart. Those early experiences planted the seeds for both my life’s work and my storytelling—teaching me compassion, resilience, and the importance of showing up for others.
Years later, that calling led me to found Backpack Society, a Colorado-based nonprofit dedicated to removing food insecurity as an obstacle for children so they can grow, learn, and thrive. What began as a small kitchen-table effort has grown into a community-wide movement supporting thousands of students and families through school partnerships, grocery access programs, and dignity-centered food support.
Every day, I see firsthand how hunger affects learning, confidence, and childhood joy. I also witness incredible strength in the children and families we serve. These moments deeply influence my writing.
My debut children’s book, Benny’s Tummy Monster, was born from those experiences. It tells the story of a young boy navigating school while carrying the invisible weight of hunger—through the gentle lens of a little monster living in his belly. I wrote this story for the children who struggle quietly, for the parents doing their best, and for the teachers and caregivers who notice when something isn’t quite right.
Through my books, yes - there will be more!! I hope to create safe spaces for big feelings, spark meaningful conversations, and help children feel seen and understood. I believe every child deserves dignity, kindness, and the reassurance that they are not alone.
When I’m not writing or working alongside our incredible community partners, I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors, and finding inspiration in everyday moments.
Thank you for being here—and for caring about the stories that matter.
